Ezra wanted to commit murder. He had never been so angry in his entire life. Teddy had taken his breath away as she entered the ballroom. Then the crush of people in the ballroom made it impossible to reach her side, and she was surrounded by gentlemen vying for her attention. He wasnât surprised all the men had nearly run to her side. Had they filled up her dance card already? He hoped not. Ezra wanted to dance with her again. Heâd prefer a waltz, but heâd take whatever she had left. He hated dancing, but he loved having her in his arms. Heâd dance all night for that pleasure alone.
He pushed his way through until he was almost to her where she was speaking to her sister. Ezra only had to take a few more steps and heâd be right next to her. As he was about to do that, a gentleman strode up to Teddy and held out his hand to her. She smiled at him and placed her hand in his as he led her to the dance floor. Ezraâs heart thundered in his chest. She was dancing with the Marquess of Hawthorne. Not just any dance either. The strands of the waltz started playing. Ezra had to retain every ounce of control he could muster not to storm onto the floor and interrupt them. He wanted to have her in his arms, and it was nearly killing him to watch as another man led her in the waltz.
Sheffield came to stand beside him. âGraystone and his wife seem to remain occupied with their guests. When do you plan on having your meeting with Lady Theodora?â
âAs soon as I can wrench her from her plethora of admirers,â he nearly growled out the words. He was not accustomed to sharing her, and he was not liking it. Not at all.
âSounds like there is a little trouble in paradise,â Fox said, then grinned. âPlease tell me youâre not in love with her. You reassured me you were not in the market for a wife.â
âI wasnât,â he said.
âBut you are now?â Sheffield lifted a brow. âI suppose that the right woman might change a manâs perspective.â
Ezra would have to agree with that statement. âGraystone fell in love and married. That should have been a sign it could happen to us as well.â
âThatâs what I was trying to tell you,â Fox exclaimed. He threw up his hands in the air. âWhy does no one ever listen to me?â
âBecause you often speak nonsense?â Sheffield grinned. He patted Foxâs shoulder in a reassuring manner. âYou shouldnât be overly concerned. No sane woman would willing agree to be your wife. Iâm sure youâll remain safe for many years to come.â
Fox glared at him. âYou are not helping.â
âHow about I find Graystoneâs brandy and share it with you? Will that make it all better?â Sheffieldâs tone was cajoling, like he was attempting to soothe a spoiled child.
âYes,â Fox said. âBut you are not fooling me. I know you want the brandy as much as I do.
